Nature knows best: The story behind the bahamaSpa™ skincare brand

Consumer interest in natural and organic beauty products has skyrocketed in recent years as people become more aware of what goes into the products they buy.

Consumer interest in natural and organic beauty products has skyrocketed in recent years as people become more aware of what goes into the products they buy. Beauty supplies inspired by organic elements found in nature, free from chemicals, artificial ingredients or preservatives, and with a minimalist list of ingredients have moved out of the niche market and into the mainstream.

In fact, the organic personal care and cosmetic products market is expected to reach $19.8 billion (US) by 2022, which is a compound annual growth rate of 10.2% during the forecast period of 2016-2022. The beauty industry is being redefined, with even established brands tapping into the ‘all-natural’ space, in an effort to capitalise on what the public wants clean, simple, but effective products.

The bahamaSpa™ range of products, which includes sugar scrubs, bath bars and body butter, typically only contain five to six ingredients or less. They are also made up of indigenous elements such as coconut oil, shea butter, sea salt, and avocado oil, and are palm, phthalate and paraben-free. The brand is popular with Bahamians and people from all over the world and can be found at upscale boutiques, resorts and spas in the Caribbean, as well as in select locations in the US. Indira says her aim was to create a one-of-a-kind “eco-friendly, valuable souvenir, a useful gift” which people could treasure but that was also practical. She was also motivated to embody the natural beauty of The Bahamas.

“Everything at bahamaSpa™ is made from the very finest, natural, and edible ingredients from the land and sea and designed to be an escape to paradise for the senses and skin. We want to provide a particular feeling for customers – relax, unwind, replenish, escape, total wellness! We are also inspired to continuously expand by the many indigenous herbs, beauty secrets, and classic rituals of our islands, and our people. We absolutely love what we do, and we believe in our products.

Indira is so passionate about protecting the planet, the company is 90% plastic free, and all items are packaged in environmentally-friendly, biodegradable materials. Customers are also encouraged to reuse jars and bottles where possible.

Indira adds: “Our true love of people and the planet motivates us to remain skin friendly and eco from product to packaging. Simplicity is also a cornerstone of our brand. Our mission is, and always will be, to protect both the planet and our beloved clients from the torrent of harmful chemicals found in most commercial products.”

The COVID-19 health crisis has brought up new challenges for every business but bahamaSpa™ has adapted by launching a subscription box service and a line of products for the home. One of the company’s current best sellers is a hair care product that was launched in the middle of the coronavirus lockdown. Good&Kinky Hair™, which includes a hair treatment called Avocado BOOST™, was test marketed for two years and has had rave reviews.

Meanwhile, Indira reveals that she is currently in London “working diligently to secure factory facilities, partners and source supplies”. She adds: “We are using this period while our primary market, The Bahamas, is closed due to the pandemic, to grow internationally. Our plan is expansion into the UK and then onto European markets – Germany, France, Italy – where we have the most positive feedback and requests for reorders.

“We feel so privileged and proud that demand for our products is continuously high and we are expanding despite the current pandemic.”
